AST Employee Leave & Organ Donation Program

Making The Gift-of-Life A Reality

Public and private employers across the U.S. are implementing programs that make it easier for their employees to donate their organs to loved ones. Visit the links below to learn about Employee Leave and Organ Donation Programs and to view conversations with organ donors whose decisions to give the gift-of-life were assisted by employers whose programs and policies facilitated the process.

The AST has launched this exciting program that we anticipate may have a significant impact upon the number of live organ donations. This program removes the financial disincentives connected with organ donation – providing organ donors with the ability to conduct this unselfish act, without incurring any financial hardship.

We need your help to make giving the gift of life a reality.

On September 27, 1999, the Federal Government changed its “employee leave” laws to provide its workforce with more adequate time to recuperate from the organ donation process. In addition, many state governments also have acted to amend their leave policies for employees seeking to serve as organ donors.

We are calling upon AST members and others to help us by presenting the human resource professional in your institution with this program proposal. Our goal is to enlist every member institution in the program, thereby providing extended leave for donation to the thousands of people employed by those institutions.

There are a number of tools below for your use when meeting with your human resources professional and obtaining their participation in the program.
