Study: Colonization with small conidia Aspergillus species is associated with bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome Source: American Journal of Transplantation (subscription required) Aspergillus colonization after lung transplantation may increase the risk for bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), a disease of small airways. Researchers hypothesized that colonization with small conidia Aspergillus species would be associated with a greater risk of BOS, based upon an increased likelihood of deposition in small airways. Although other virulence traits besides conidia size may be important, it... Read More...

Cardiac troponin T before and after kidney transplantation: Determinants and implications for posttransplant survival Source: American Journal of Transplantation (subscription required) Pretransplant cardiac troponin T (cTnTpre) is a significant predictor of survival postkidney transplantation. Researchers assessed correlates of cTnT levels pre- and posttransplantation and their relationship with recipient survival. A total of 1206 adult recipients of kidney grafts between 2000 and 2010 were included. ... Read More...

Kidney transplants with progressing chronic diseases express high levels of acute kidney injury tanscripts Source: American Journal of Transplantation (subscription required) It has been previously reported that kidney transplants with early acute injury express transcripts indicating injury repair — the acute kidney injury signal. This study investigated the significance of this signal in transplants with other conditions, including rejection and recurrent disease. The injury signal was elevated in biopsies in many different conditions, including T cell-mediated rejection and potentially... Read More...

Late onset cytomegalovirus in lung transplant recipients: Can cmv serostatus guide the duration of prophylaxis? Source: American Journal of Transplantation (subscription required) Evidence supports the use of 12 months of cytomegalovirus prophylaxis in all at-risk lung transplants; whether cytomegalovirus serostatus can be used to further optimize this duration remains to be determined. The purpose of a recent retrospective study was to determine if cytomegalovirus serostatus of both donor and recipient were associated with late-onset cytomegalovirus.... Read More...

Yesterday, Congressional leaders introduced legislation to end the research ban on organ donation from HIV-Positive donors to HIV-Positive transplant recipients. The HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act would create a potential path for HIV-positive organs to be donated to HIV-positive patients, thus potentially saving the lives of transplant patients languishing on waiting lists. Congresswoman Lois Capps (D-CA) and Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Tom Coburn (R-OK), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), and Rand Paul (R-KY) introduced the legislation, which charges the Department of Health and Human Services (...
