Name: Martha Pavlakis, MD, FAST, FASN
Speciality: Transplant Nephrology
Graduated from: SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine (MD), Tufts New England Medical Center (intern and resident), Beth Israel Hospital (Renal fellowship and clinical research fellowship)
Current Position: Medical Director, Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
Current Projects: I am the incoming vice chair of the UNOS kidney committee and a founding member of the New England BK Consortium working on harmonizing BK screening protocols throughout region 1 kidney transplant centers, for the purposes of jointly optimizing screening and management of BKV infections.  And of course, as medical director of my transplant program, I am always working on improving our patient care services.
What made you decide to work in transplantation? My interview for renal fellowship at Beth Israel Hospital involved a discussion with Terry Strom where I learned about transplant nephrology for the first time and I never looked back!
What do you find to be the most valuable aspect of your work? I value my work one patient at a time.
How have you served AST? I am the current chair of the Education Committee and am proud of all the educational initiatives the committee is shepherding from the Communities of Practice to the broader membership.
Fun Fact: My paternal grandmother's cousin was one of the Daredevils of Niagara, who went over Niagara Falls in a barrel in 1930.  https://imaxniagara.com/daredevils-of-niagara-george-l-stathakis/  He didn't survive.
