The AST mourns the passing of one of its past presidents (2002-2003): William Harmon, MD. Dr. Harmon's career as a pediatric nephrologist demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the care and study of children with end stage renal disease (ESRD) and transplantation. Whether it was through his work at UNOS, his founding leadership of the North American Pediatric Transplant Cooperative Study (NAPRTCS), his founding leadership of the International Pediatric Transplant Association (IPTA), his service on the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Organ Transplantation (ACOT), or his leadership of AST, he worked tirelessly at the local, national, and international levels to assure competent and equitable care for children with ESRD both pre- and post-transplant.
Dr. Harmon was instrumental in the design and success of several NIAID-sponsored pediatric kidney transplant prospective therapeutic trials, spearheading innovative immunosuppression regimens for children. He served as Chief of Pediatric Nephrology at the Boston Children's Hospital and in that capacity he trained 38 pediatric nephrologists, many of whom went on to assume leadership positions themselves. He was an editor of the Pediatric Transplantation and Pediatric Nephrology texts and has over 100 published manuscripts. He has made an immense mark on pediatric ESRD and pediatric transplantation. His inspirational leadership and thoughtful approach to patient care will be greatly missed.
