Dr. Nelson is the Chief of Heart Transplant Medicine at the Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute in Oklahoma, which boasts one of the fastest-growing MCS/ECMO programs in the country with over 100 implants in 2015.
As chair of the AST Thoracic Advisory Council, he promoted and facilitated the council's transition to a community of practice (COP) and added the Critical Care component. He has also served on the AST Public Policy, Education, and Nominating Committees. He is a member of the Thoracic and Critical Care, Infectious Disease, Diagnostics, and Psychiatric COPs.
Dr. Nelson has been UNOS-approved as primary transplant physician for heart transplantation, lung transplantation, and heart-lung transplantation. He has served on the UNOS MPSC, and as Region 4 Councilor served on the UNOS Board of Directors. He served on the UNOS Scientific Advisory Council when it published the first center-specific data report, served on the UNOS Thoracic Committee for multiple terms (elected and appointed), and currently is a member of the UNOS DTAC.
He was co-chair of a HRSA/Alliance Consensus Conference on Donor Management Research, and was co-chair of the Scientific Knowledge Workgroup of the HRSA Donor Management Task Force.
Dr. Nelson is a graduate of Northwestern’s Honors Program in Medical Education, Internal Medicine residency, and Stanford University's Fellowship in both Pulmonary Medicine and in Heart and Lung Transplantation.
