The UC San Diego Center for Research, Education, Innovation and Transformation in Organ Donation in partnership with DTI presents "NRP in Action: Advanced Training in Normothermic Regional Perfusion."
Course description:
This course is designed to provide transplant and procurement surgeons, OPO professionals, and critical care teams with advanced training in the principles and practice of Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP). Hosted by the UC San Diego REIMAGINE Center in collaboration with the Center for the Future of Surgery and DTI, this multi-day program combines didactic instruction, case-based discussions, and hands-on surgical training using porcine models in a simulated operating room environment.
The educational intent of this course is to equip participants with the technical expertise, clinical decision-making skills, and interdisciplinary collaboration strategies necessary to effectively implement NRP in organ recovery. Specifically, the course will focus on:
Technical Mastery of NRP – Providing hands-on experience in the surgical steps of NRP, including arterial and venous cannulation techniques, circuit setup, hemodynamic monitoring, and perfusion management.
Optimizing Organ Recovery and Utilization – Enhancing participants' ability to assess donor eligibility, troubleshoot perfusion challenges, and maximize organ viability through real-time clinical scenarios.
Ethical, Regulatory, and Logistical Considerations – Exploring the ethical landscape, institutional policies, and evolving regulatory frameworks surrounding NRP in different healthcare settings.
Interdisciplinary Teamwork and Communication – Strengthening collaboration between transplant surgeons, intensivists, OPO professionals, perfusionists, and other key stakeholders to improve donor management and organ utilization.
By addressing critical gaps in transplant education, NRP in Action provides a structured, high-fidelity training experience that empowers participants to integrate NRP into clinical practice confidently. Through this course, we aim to expand access to advanced NRP techniques, enhance surgical proficiency, and ultimately improve outcomes in organ transplantation.
Registration includes:
Two, 2 hours webinars on May 20th and May 22nd with international and national leaders in NRP to discussion international (Spain, Italy, France, Belgium) and national experience (Texas, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Utah, California) in DCD/DCD-NRP, programmatic structure/development and outcomes
A two day, in person course in San Diego with didactic and hands-on (porcine DCD model for NRP cannulation (TA-, A-NRP, and combined A-NRP with SRR in the chest)) education lead by DTI (Amelia Hessheimer, Irene Bello, Angel Ruiz, Brian Alvarez, Alex Montero, Gabriel Moreno), and US leaders in NRP (Anji Wall, Marty Sellers and Phil Paci).
