Maryjane Farr, MD, MSc, is an endowed Professor of Medicine and Section Chief of Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Heart Transplant at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also Director of Clinical and Translational Heart Transplant Research and Executive Committee Member, Penn Transplant Institute. Dr. Farr spent five years at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center as an endowed Professor of Medicine, the Section Chief of Heart Failure, and Medical Director of the Heart Transplant Program. Dr. Farr fstarted her transplant career at Columbia University Medical Center, was a Shorin-Silverstein transplant research scholar, served as Medical Director of the Heart Transplant Program for several years and was an endowed Associate Professor of Medicine. Dr. Farr is a graduate of Barnard College, Columbia University, Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons (AOA), and Columbia Mailman School of Public Health (MSc, 2011; MPH, May 2026). Dr. Farr trained in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr. Farr has been a long-standing member and Fellow of AST. She served for several years as an educator for the Fellows Symposium and will serve as an educator for the 2026 ATC Medical Directors’ Forum. She currently serves on the AST Conflict-of-Interest Committee, the AST Public Policy Committee, and is the Chair of the TCC COP. She will co-lead a half-day Heart HOPE Symposium at the 2026 ATC. Dr. Farr has contributed to several AST consensus conferences and statements, including the companion documents on transplant after solid organ and bone marrow/lymphatic malignancies, program performance metrics, heart-kidney transplant, frailty and antibody-mediated rejection.
Dr. Farr was a member and leader with the OPTN for nine years, serving on the Thoracic Committee, as Heart Subcommittee Chair, on the Membership and Professional Standards Committee, and three years on the OPTN Board of Directors (2021-2024). With ISHLT, she has served as the Chair of the Conflict-of-Interest Committee, on the Consensus Conference Committee, the Research Oversight Committee and will serve as the Chair of the ISHLT DCD Task Force. She is an Associate Editor and Columnist at Circulation, and in 2024 was inducted into the Association of University Cardiologists.
Dr. Farr has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Farr has lectured and written on the fairness of organ allocation, socioeconomic status, sex differences and transplant opportunity, desensitization, pediatric-to-adult transition after transplant, primary graft dysfunction, donation after circulatory death, and HIV+ in transplant.
