Insurance Coverage for Living Donors

The American Society of Transplantation (AST) believes that all living organ donors should have healthcare insurance for the duration of their lives. This would protect them from the consequences of conditions arising directly as a result of organ donation should they not have access to care through their recipient's insurance as well as helping to mitigate against injury caused by disease processes, that although not directly caused by donation may pose increased risks to those with reduced reserve as a consequence of previous organ donation. Insuring that all living organ donors have healthcare insurance will improve access of former donors to preventative care, may facilitate the collection of long-term data to better define the potential consequences of organ donation, and is consistent with guidelines governing living organ donation throughout the rest of the world.

In summary, the AST supports a partnership between society, insurers, employers, and the government to insure that all living organ donors have life time health insurance.
