Register as an Organ Donor

What does it mean?

When someone asks you if you are a registered organ donor, that refers to deceased donation.

  • Deceased donation is when you donate your organs or tissue after death has occurred and you no longer need those organs.
  • One organ donor has the ability to save 8 lives through the gift of heart, lungs (2), kidneys (2), liver, pancreas, and intestine
  • One tissue donor can enhance the lives of over 75 individuals with the gift of cornea, heart valves, tendon, bone, and skin.

There are several ways to register as an organ donor

  • organdonor.gov - This will bring you to a US state map and direct you to how your local state
  • Your driver's license - When you get your driver's license they will ask you if you want to register as an organ donor, simply say yes!
  • RegisterMe.org - This is a national registry created by Donate Life America and is a great way to easily sign up online
  • The iPhone health app - you can register in your iPhone health app in under 60 seconds (it is connected to the DLA Registry).
  • Most importantly - share your decision with friends and family and have a conversation about their wishes as well.

By registering your decision to be an organ donor, you are helping to save lives and give hope to the more than 100,000 people in the United States currently waiting for lifesaving organ transplants.
