AST Board of Directors Election Results

The American Society of Transplantation (AST) announced its recently elected 2019-2020 board members, including its new President, President-elect, and Secretary, at the American Transplant Congress (ATC) in Boston, MA. The AST inducted its new president, Emily Blumberg, MD during its annual meeting on June 3, 2019.

Dr. Blumberg is a Transplant Infectious Diseases specialist and the Director of the Transplant Infectious Diseases Program and the Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. She has been a member of the AST since 1999 and has been the Chair of the Training and Workforce Committee, the Infectious Disease Community of Practice, and the Conflict of Interest Committee.

Richard Formica, MD was elected as President-elect and will assume the AST presidency in June 2020. Dr. Formica serves as Director of Transplant Medicine, the Director of the Outpatient Transplantation Service, the Medical Director of Adult and Pediatric Kidney Transplantation and Medical Director Pancreas Transplantation at Yale University. He assumes the role of AST President-elect after serving as Secretary. 

Deepali Kumar, MD was elected as AST’s Secretary. Dr. Kumar is a Transplant ID physician and Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, within the Toronto Multi-Organ Transplant Program. 

Three new councilors-at-large were also announced. Joining the Board are Roy Bloom, MBBCh, Betsy Verna, MD, MSc, and Jim Rodrigue, PhD.

Ronald Gill, PhD, Alex Wiseman, MD, Jon Kobashigawa, MD, and Nicole Turgeon, MD completed their terms on the AST Board.
